The McBarnet family’s book business has existed for more than 3 decades. Gill’s boys Eddie and Willie inspired the early stories of whales, parrot, geckos, volcano and sharks, and 10 years later, Tara inspired books with themes of turtles, lei-making and “…a child’s celebration of Hawaii.” One of Gill’s most recent stories, the Rainbow Mermaids of Hawaii was inspired by the “next generation”: Gill’s first grandchild Max, and her niece and nephew’s girls Cliona, Alanna and Deanna.
Whenever she can, Gill enjoys visiting Hawaii’s schools and libraries. In addition to reading her stories, she sometimes talks about the publishing process – a simplified version of what it takes to produce a book. In turn, it’s a pleasure to see the illustrations and stories that children produce.
